Muscle Shoals/Tuscaloosa- The Shelton State Softball team went 3-1 (2-3, 3-2, 5-1, 2-1) in their weekend series with Northwest Shoals.
Game 1:
The Lady Bucs lost a pitchers' duel in game 1 3-2 as they recorded just 5 hits in the game.
Lexi Darnell went the distance in the circle giving 3 runs (1 earned) on 8 hits, adding 3 strikeouts.
There were only 3 hits combined through the first 3 innings before the Lady Patriots pieced together a pair singles around a groundout to score the first run in the 4th inning. The Lady Patriots would add to their lead in the 6th as a double, sacrifice bunt, and error would allow the second run to score before back-to-back singles would plate their third run.
Going into the 6th inning the Lady Bucs had only 2 hits (Layla Bradshaw & Alana Spann), but Layla Bradshaw would lead the inning off with a base hit and move to third on a Lauren Coker double. Willeshia Lang would drive Bradshaw in with a sacrifice fly to centerfield and a Harley Johnson base hit would score Coker to make the score 3-2.
The bottom of the 7th saw the Lady Bucs go 3 up, 3 down to end the game.
Layla Bradshaw had 2 of the 5 hits for the Lady Bucs with Spann, Coker, and Johnson adding the other 3.
Game 2:
The Lady Bucs responded in the nightcap, taking game 2, 3-2 in 9 innings.
Victoria Hagemann pitched to all but two batters in the game, going 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs on 12 hits while striking out 5. Mackenzie Harper got the win in the circle despite as she would retire the final two batters in the 9th for the Lady Bucs.
Northwest Shoals would start the game with 5 consecutive singles but were only able to plate one run in inning after they had a runner caught stealing home. Shoals would add to their lead in the 3rd inning with 3 base hits, but that would be the last run they scored.
The Lady Bucs responded in the bottom of the inning as Aspen Gerald lead off with a base hit before Chelsey Hogsed would move Gerald to 2nd with a sacrifice bunt. Alana Spann would single to center field and Chloe Mitchell would fly out to center field, but it was deep enough to score Gerald. Spann would steal second base, and Layla Bradshaw knocked a two out base hit to left to tie the game at 2.
Neither team would be able to truly threaten again with only one batter over the minimum coming to plate in 6th, 7th, and 8th innings combined.
The 9th inning saw Willeshia Lang lead off with a single and Chelsey Hogsed add a two-out single before Alana Spann drove in Lang to win the game in walk-off fashion.
Spann went 3-5 in game 2, while Layla Bradshaw and Chelsey Hogsed added two hits apiece. All 3 RBIs in the game came from the first 3 hitters in the lineup (Spann, Mitchell, and Bradshaw).
Game 3:
Stellar pitching led the Lady Bucs to a 5-1 victory in game 3.
Victoria Hagemann went all 7 innings allowing 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 5.
The Lady Bucs struck first capitalizing on a 2-out walk (Layla Bradshaw) and hit by pitch (Lauren Coker). Tyeshia Willams drove Bradshaw in to give Shelton a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Bucs added to the lead in the 5th after a Shoals error. Layla Bradshaw would reach on an error and advance to 2nd before a Lauren Coker double that would push the lead to 2-0.
The 6th inning saw Shelton string together 4 singles (Natalie Liner, Aspen Gerald, Chloe Mitchell, and Layla Bradshaw) and be aided by a Lady Patriot error enroute to expanding the lead to 5-0. Northwest added their lone run of the game in the bottom of the 6th.
Layla Bradshaw and Chloe Mitchell paced the attack for the Lady Bucs with 2 hits apiece. Lauren Coker drove in 2 runs and Bradshaw scored 2.
Game 4:
3 Lady Buc pitchers contributed to lights a performance in a 2-1 win in game 4.
Lexi Darnell started the game, going 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits. Kaitlyn Powell gave up 1 hit in an inning of work and Mackenzie Harper got the save after recording the final 2 outs.
Shelton would begin the scoring in the 2nd as Natalie Liner drove in Lauren Coker. The Lady Bucs would get a 2-out walk and 2 singles to score their next run in the 4th. Alana Spann scored Harley Johnson on an infield single. Shoals would add their lone run in the 6th.
The Lady Bucs were outhit in the game 5-4.
For the Series:
The pitching staff for the Lady Bucs was phenomenal, giving up 7 runs (5 earned) on 28 hits over 30 innings of work. The staff posted a 1.16 ERA in the series. The 7 runs surrendered in the series is the second lowest mark the Lady Bucs have posted in ACCC play.
Layla Bradshaw led the Lady Buc offense, hitting .429 (6-14) while scoring a team-high 3 runs. Bradshaw is hitting .409 (18-44) in the month of April with 10 runs scored. Alana Spann added 6 hits as well.
The Lady Bucs are set to host Southern Union at Bowers Park on Thursday, April 24!
