Lady Bucs Sweep Postseason Awards Behind Dominguez-Tellez Individual Championship
Huntsville- Miriam Dominguez-Tellez cemented her legacy at Shelton State on Friday as she set a new school record en route to claiming the first individual cross-country championship in school history. Posting a new personal record of 19:35, Dominguez-Tellez ran away from the rest of the conference winning by nearly 15 seconds. "I could not be prouder of Miriam, she has put in an incredible amount of work to put herself in the position to win," said head coach Charles Tiller. "She came to us as a 22:30 high school runner and her growth is a testament to her work ethic and dedication to our program." After the race, Miriam was named Alabama Community College Conference Women's Runner of the Year.
Dominguez-Tellez and the Lady Bucs earned a 2nd place finish behind Wallace State. Sophomore Rita Walker secured a 3rd place finish with a time of 19:58, followed by Hattie Hurst (21:08), Annel Uruchurtu (21:55), Jasmine Wilson (22:31), and Zoe Lucas (24:24). Tiller said, "Miriam, Rita, Hattie, Annel, Jasmine, and Zoe demonstrated exceptional teamwork and determination. Finishing second in the highly competitive ACCC is a remarkable achievement, and we're eager to build on this finish as we prepare for the National Championships."
Coach Charles Tiller was named Alabama Community College Conference women's cross-country Coach of the Year following the race. "Being chosen ACCC Women's Coach of the Year by my fellow coaches is truly an honor. It tells me the dedication and hard work by the Shelton women is being noticed. I appreciate the efforts of these young ladies and the support of the incredible administration and staff at Shelton State," said Tiller of receiving the honor.
Shelton State Men's XC finished 8th, led by a 15th place finish from Brannon Lugo.
The Lady Bucs now advance to the NJCAA National Tournament in Richmond, Virginia on November 9th.
