Baseball Splits DH; Wins Series
BESSEMER - The Shelton State Community College baseball team split a double header with Lawson State on Friday.
Shelton State (10-8, 3-1 ACCC) dropped the first game 3-2, but rebounded for a 13-6 win in the nightcap to take the series. The second game was called in the eighth inning due to darkness.
Lawson State (8-12, 1-3 ACCC) scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead, but not without controversy.
Charles Calvin led off with a base hit and Hayden Register drew a walk. Register had a 2-1 count and the fourth pitch was ball three and was awarded first base.
After a lengthy discussion between Shelton State head coach Bobby Sprowl and the two umpires, Register was temporary called back to the plate but ultimately was awarded the walk.
Noah Jarrell followed with an RBI single to tie the game. After a fly out, Chase Crumley delivered an RBI single to score Register with the go-ahead run.
Sprowl filed a formal protest with the ACCC Office in hopes of having the 3-ball walk and inning overturned.
Dylan Lewkutz (4-1) pitched a seven-inning complete game for the win.
Sophomore Kenneth Diddell (2-1) was charged with the loss.
Sophomore third baseman Slade Sullivan was responsible for the Bucs two runs.
Sullivan delivered a two-out RBI single in the second inning to give the Bucs a 1-0 lead.
Freshman Jarret Scott had a one-out single and moved into scoring position on sophomore John Robicheaux sac bunt.
The Cougars tied the game at 1-1 in the third on Calvin's two-out single.
Sullivan struck again in the fifth with solo home run to dead center field. It was his first career home run.
Sullivan went 3-for-3 with a double, home run and two RBIs in game one.
He continued his prowess in game two, going 1-for-2 with three RBIs, two walks and one sac fly.
Robicheaux went 4-for-5 in the nightcap, including a two-run home run in the eighth inning. He also had three runs scored, three RBIs and three stolen bases.
He was 7-for-11 with one double, two home runs and seven RBIs. He also added five runs and four stolen bases.
The Bucs trailed 1-0, 5-3 and 5-4 in game two before taking the lead for good with a six-run seventh inning.
Sophomore James Graphos started the rally with a base hit to left and scored the tying run on freshman Owen Anchors' triple over the head of the left fielder to give the Bucs a 6-5 lead.
Robicheaux followed with an RBI single to make it 7-5.
Robicheaux stole second and third as Sullivan drew a walk. He scored on a passed ball to make it 8-5.
Freshman Cody Kropp walked and sophomore Landen Ingram laid down a perfect bunt for single to load the bases.
Freshman pinch-hitter Glavine Lamberth delivered a sac fly to score Sullivan. Sophomore Jackson Henderson smashed an RBI single to score Kropp and push the lead to 10-5.
The Cougars loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the frame, but was limited to one run by freshman Corbin Hamric, who got a double play and strikeout.
Scott (1-0) was the winning pitcher. Hamric notched his ACCC-leading third save.
Robicheaux blasted a two-run home run in the eighth, his second of the series.
