USCLE SHOALS – The No. 23 Shelton State Community College baseball team piled up 34 runs in a pair of run-rule wins over Northwest Shoals Community College at Mark Lee Legacy Field on Thursday.
Shelton State scored five runs in the first inning and cruised to a 15-5 victory in game one. The Bucs kept the offense going with a 19-2 win in game two blasting three home runs and five doubles in the run-rule win.
In the two games on Thursday, Shelton State pounded out 28 hits, including nine doubles and five home runs.
Shelton State (25-10, 15-3 ACCC) had five doubles and two home runs in the opener.
Freshman DH Jarret Scott went 3-for-3 with two runs, one home run and four RBIs.
Freshman shortstop Griffin Rardin was 1-for-2 with three runs scored, one home run and three RBIs. He smacked a three-run home in the first inning to set the tone for the game and the day.
Sophomore right fielder John Robicheaux went 2-for-4 with one run, one double and two RBIs.
Sophomore second baseman James Graphos went 1-for-3 with two runs scored, one double and one RBI.
Sophomore third baseman Slade Sullivan was 2-for-3 with one run, one double and one RBI.
In addition to scoring five runs in the first inning, the Bucs scored eight runs in the fourth inning.
Sophomore right hander Payton Zupancic (1-1) was credited with the win on the mound. He allowed two runs and three hits in 2 2/3 innings after replacing starter Gunner Dodd, who left with a blister on his finger in the third inning.
The second game was more of the same for the Bucs.
After a three-run first inning, Shelton State scored five runs in the second and eight more in the third inning.
Graphos went 3-for-4 with one run, two doubles and a career-high five RBIs. In the two games, he was 4-for-7 with five runs scored, three doubles and six RBIs.
Rardin, who homered in both games, went 2-for-2 with two runs, one home run and three RBIs. He finished the day, going 3-for-4 with five runs scored, two home runs and six RBIs.
Sullivan went 2-for-3 with two runs, one home run and three RBIs. He went 4-for-6 with three runs, one double, one home run and four RBIs. He has homered in three of the five ACCC series.
Robicheaux hit a two-run home run in the second game. He has homered in all five ACCC series. He went 3-for-5 with four runs scored, one double, one home run and four RBIs.
Shelton State scored in eight of the 10 innings on Thursday. A total of 14 different Bucs had at least one hit in the twin bill.
Sophomore first baseman Jackson Henderson was 3-for-6 with one run, one double, one RBI and one walk. Since moving into the leadoff spot, he has reached base 11 times in 16 plate appearances for the Bucs.
Sophomore Eli Driskell (6-1) went the distance for his sixth win. He allowed two runs and three hits and struck out five.
Northwest Shoals (18-18, 9-10 ACCC) only used four pitchers in the two losses.
Jarrett Morrison and Newton Gardner both homered for the Patriots.
The series will wrap up on Friday, April 3 with a 2 p.m. doubleheader in Tuscaloosa.
