GADSDEN – The No. 22 ranked Shelton State Community College baseball team split its Thursday doubleheader with Gadsden State and in the process reduced its magic number to three to win the ACCC regular season championship.
Shelton State rallied for a 9-4 in in the opener, scoring six runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Gadsden State rallied for 5-2 win in the nightcap, scoring all five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Shelton State (36-14, 25-5 ACCC) leads second-place Southern Union (31-17, 21-9 ACCC) by four games in the standings with six games to play. Any combination of Shelton State wins or Southern Union losses equaling three will give the Bucs the regular season championship.
Freshman shortstop Griffin Rardin reached base in seven of eight plate appearances on Thursday, going 4-for-5 with one run, two walks and one hit by pitch. He extended his hitting streak to 18 games.
Sophomore first baseman Jackson Henderson homered in both games of the doubleheader. He finished 4-for-9 with four runs scored, two home runs and two RBIs.
Sophomore left fielder Owen Anchors was 3-for-6 and scored three runs.
The Bucs strung together four straight hits in the seventh inning to take a 6-3 lead. Henderson, Anchors and sophomore John Robicheaux had three straight singles to put the Bucs up 4-3. Sophomore James Graphos followed with an RBI double to push the lead to 5-3.
Rardin was hit by a pitch to load the bases and freshman DH Carson Mann drove in two more runs with a single. Sophomore third baseman Slade Sullivan capped the inning with a two-run single to stretch the lead to 9-3.
Freshman left-hander Corbin Hamric (4-1) got the last five outs for his fourth win of the season. He allowed an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Freshman right-hander Tanner Hermesch, making his first game one start in ACCC play, allowed three runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Gadsden State took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a two-run single by Cooper Jarvis.
Shelton State took a 3-2 lead in the third on a solo home run by Henderson and a two-run single by freshman DH Glavine Lamberth.
The Cardinals tied the game on Atticus Barton's RBI single in the fourth.
Gadsden State (26-21, 14-16 ACCC) scored five runs in the sixth for the win in game two. Ricky Bellatoni had a two-run single and Jonah Jackson added an RBI double.
Sophomore right hander Eli Driskell (8-2) allowed three runs and seven hits in five-plus innings en route to his second loss of the season.
Nick McCord (3-2) earned the win for the Cardinals.
Henderson scored both runs for the Bucs in game two.
He singled and later scored on an RBI single by Graphos to the Bucs a 1-0 lead.
Henderson hit his second home run of the day with an opposite field blast in the eighth inning.
Shelton State will host Gadsden State on Sunday, April 26 in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
