Bucs Sweep Gadsden State; Clinch Top Seed at ACCC Tournament
TUSCALOOSA - No. 22 Shelton State Community College baseball team swept a doubleheader with Gadsden State on Sunday afternoon, and in the process clinched the No. 1 seed at the 2026 ACCC Tournament.
The Bucs posted an 11-0 run-rule victory in game one and finished the sweep with an 8-2 win in game two.
Shelton State (38-14, 27-5 ACCC) clinched its 19th regular season ACCC title and will be the No. 1 at the ACCC Tournament held May 7-10 in Oxford, Ala.
Sophomore right fielder John Robicheaux paced the Bucs in game one, going 3-for-3 with a two-run triple. It was the first triple of his career.
Sophomore third baseman Slade Sullivan added a two-run double and freshman catcher Micah Tagiaum blasted a two-run home run.
Sophomore right hander Will Harrison (7-3) recorded his fourth complete game shutout this season. He limited the Cardinals to two hits.
The Bucs wasted little time scoring five runs in the first inning.
Sophomore first baseman Jackson Henderson opened the game with a double down the right field line. Sophomore second baseman James Graphos singled to left field to put runners on the corners.
Freshman shortstop Griffin Rardin gave the Bucs a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly and freshman left fielder Owen Anchors made it 2-0 with an RBI double.
After ground out, Robicheaux singled and freshman Cody Kropp reached on error that made it 3-0. Sullivan capped the inning with a two-run double.
The added three runs in the third to make it 8-0. Henderson, Graphos and Rardin drew three consecutive walks to load the bases.
Sophomore DH Grant Browning followed with a sacrifice fly and Robicheaux drilled a two-run triple to right center field. It was his first career triple.
Taguiam's two-run home run to left field made it 10-0 in the third inning. The Bucs made it 11-0 in the fourth when Browning doubled, moved to third on Robicheaux's third hit and scored on a throwing error.
Rardin and freshman catcher Drew Ollis paced the offense in the 8-2 win in game two.
Rardin went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, one double and one RBI.
Ollis went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Five Shelton State pitchers held Gadsden State to two unearned runs and three hits.
Henderson (1-0) made his first mound appearance of the season and allowed an unearned run in the first inning as the Bucs made two errors.
Sophomore Peyton Zupancic allowed an unearned run in three innings of work.
Freshman Walker Craig and sophomore Kenneth Diddell each had two scoreless innings. Freshman Corbin Hamric worked a perfect ninth inning.
Gadsden State (26-23, 14-18 ACCC) managed only two unearned runs and five hits in the double header.
Both teams made four errors in the series finale.
The Bucs turned three double plays on Sunday and continued to lead the nation with 50 double plays this season.
Shelton State took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first on a RBI single by Rardin and ground ball double play.
Sullivan's two-run single in the third pushed the lead to 4-1.
Anchors' RBI double made it 5-2 in the fourth.
Ollis delivered an RBI single in the fifth and added a two-run single in the seventh.
Henderson and Sullivan both collected their 100th career hit on Sunday.
Shelton State will close out the regular season with a four-game series against Calhoun Community College. The Bucs will host the Warhawks in a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Thursday, April 30.
