Baseball Sets All-Time ACCC Wins Mark; Sweeps Calhoun

DECATUR – The No. 16 ranked Shelton State Community College baseball team posted its 31st conference victory on Saturday afternoon the set the all-time single-season record for ACCC wins.
The Bucs tied the single-season record with an 8-5 win in game one against Calhoun Community College and then broke the record with a 9-3 win over the Warhawks at Fred Frickie Field.
"We were very consistent on pitching, offensively and defensively all year," head coach Bobby Sporwl said following the record-setting win. "I am very proud of everyone associated with Shelton State baseball."
Shelton State (42-16, 31-5 ACCC) surpassed the previous record of 30 ACCC wins set by Wallace State Dothan in 2024. The Governors posted a 30-2 (.988) record that season.
Shelton State also holds the highest single-season winning percentage in ACCC history, posting a 20-0 (1.000) record in 1988.
The Bucs scored in three of the first four innings in game two to grab a 4-0 lead.
Shelton State got on the board with two runs in the first inning. Sophomore Slade Sullivan, who batted lead off for the first time this season, began the game with a walk. Sophomore second baseman James Graphos followed with his fourth double of the day to put runners at second and third. Freshman shortstop Griffin Rardin delivered a sac fly to score Sullivan and freshman left fielder Owen Anchors had an RBI double to score Graphos.
Graphos finished the doubleheader going 5-for-9, with five runs, four doubles and three RBIs.
Freshman right fielder Colby Sommer made it 3-0 with an RBI ground out in the second inning.
Sophomore first baseman Grant Browning had a lead off single and later scored on a passed ball to push the lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning.
Calhoun (14-37, 10-26 ACCC) scored all of its runs in a three-run fourth inning. Austin Williamson delivered an RBI single, while Trent Wilson scored on a passed ball and Jayson Smith crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
The Bucs held a narrow 4-3 lead until the ninth inning when they scored five runs to put the game out of reach.
Graphos drove in the first run with an RBI single to push the lead to 5-3. Anchors and Browning had back-to-back RBI singles to make of 7-3 and freshman Cody Kropp added a two-run single to extend the lead to 9-3.
Sophomore right hander Gunner Dodd (4-3), working his way back from a blister that has hampered him the last three weeks earned the win.
Sophomore right hander Kenneth Diddell pitched two scoreless and struck out three for his fourth save of the season.
Calhoun's Kevin Wear (1-3) took the loss.
Shelton State led 5-0 after two innings and 8-1 after five innings but had to hold on for the 8-5 win.
Sophomore right hander Will Harrison (8-3) retired the first nine batters he faced and worked five innings for his eighth win of the season. He held the Warhawks to one run and one hit.
The Warhawks scored four runs off freshman Walker Craig in the sixth inning to the cut the deficit to 8-5. Adam Yazel started the scoring with an RBI single and Smith followed with a two-run double. William Singewald added an RBI single to make it 8-5.
Freshman left-hander Corbin Hamric worked a scoreless seventh inning with two strikeouts for the league-leading seventh save. He had two saves in the series with Calhoun.
Shelton State scored twice in the first inning and added three runs in the second for a 5-0 lead.
In the first, Grapohs doubled and scored on Rardin's RBI single. Anchors then doubled to put runners at second and third. Graphos scored on a sac fly by sophomore right fielder John Robicheaux.
In the second, Graphos stroked a two-run double and Robicheaux added an RBI single to push the lead to 5-0.
The Bucs made it 6-0 in the fourth when Graphos collected his third double of the game and later scored on a ground out by Anchors.
Calhoun got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on Smith's RBI single.
The Bucs tacked on two more run in the fifth on a sacrifice bunt by freshman DH Wyatt Howell and a sac fly by freshman third baseman Cray Fite.
Anchors finished the day with three doubles and three RBIs. Kropp added two hits and two RBIs.
Sophomore first baseman Jackson Henderson reached base twice in game one and reached base in all 35 ACCC games he played his year. He pitched two scoreless innings in game two but did not have a plate appearance.
The Bucs turned three double plays on Saturday and continues to lead the nation with 50 double plays this season.
Shelton State will open the ACCC Tournament on Friday, May 8 at 10 a.m. The official bracket will be announced on Sunday after the final three series are completed.
