Baseball Wins ACCC Tournament Opener

OXFORD – The No. 16 ranked Shelton State Community College baseball team opened ACCC Tournament play with a 5-3 win over Snead State in second round action on Saturday at Choccolocco Park.
No. 1 seed Shelton State (43-14) will play the winner of the Wallace State Hanceville-Southern Union game on Saturday, May 9 at 11 a.m.
Sophomore Eli Driskell (10-2) pitched the first five innings for his league-leading 10th win of the season. He is the ninth pitcher in school history to win 10 games in a single season. Driskell allowed three runs on six hits, with two strikeouts and three walks.
Sophomore Peyton Zupancic entered the game in the sixth inning with two runners on base and no outs. Cam Palahach moved both runners into scoring with a sacrifice bunt. Zupancic then struck out Drew Oelke and Cole East to end the inning and stranding both runners.
Drew Puccio led off the Parsons seventh inning with a single. Caid Finn followed with a line drive to center field that was caught by freshman centerfielder Cody Kropp for the first out. Kropp then fired the ball to sophomore first baseman Jackson Henderson for the double play.
The Bucs also turned a double play in the fourth inning to extend its nation-leading total to 52 double plays this season.
Zupancic tossed four scoreless innings for his third career save.
Shelton State took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Henderson had a leadoff single scored on a sac fly by freshman left fielder Owen Anchors.
Snead State (28-25) grabbed a 2-1 lead with two runs in the second inning on an RBI single by Palahach and a sac fly by Oelke.
Shelton State took the lead back in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs. Anchors and sophomore DH Grant Browning both delivered two-out RBI singles to put Bucs in front 3-2.
The Parsons tied the game in the sixth on back-to-back singles by Puccio and Finn, and an RBI ground out by Bryce Persell to even the score at 3-3.
Shelton State immediately got the run back in the bottom of the inning on solo home run by sophomore second baseman James Graphos to give the Bucs a 4-3 lead. The home run was Graphos' first in 297 at-bats, dating back to last season against Snead State. Two of his three career home runs have come against the Parsons.
Snead State starter Layden Sanford (2-3) was charged with four runs and eight hits in six innings and took the loss.
The Bucs added an insurance run in the eighth inning of relief pitcher Aiden Goodwin. Sophomore right fielder John Robicheuax, who went 3-for-4 in the win, laid down a bunt single to open the inning. Freshman Glavine Lamberth added a pinch-hit double to put runners at second and third.
Robicheaux scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-3.
In addition to Robicheaux, Henderson and Rardin both had two hits for the Bucs.
