Lady Bucs Open Inaugural Flag Football Season
Shelton State Community College women's flag football team is set to compete in their inaugural season on Sunday, Sept. 14, as the Lady Bucs will travel to Mobile to face the Bishop State Lady Wildcats and the Lurleen B. Wallace Lady Saints.
The game will mark the launch of flag football at the junior college level as seven teams - Shelton State, Bishop State, Lurleen B. Wallace, Northwest Shoals, Wallace State, Snead State, Calhoun - are set to compete in the Alabama Community College Conference this fall.
Head coach Doug Rogers is excited about the direction of his team heading into the season opener.
"The learning curve has not been easy, but this team has embraced the grind from the beginning," Rogers said. "We have continued to get better every day and have really started to gel over the past few weeks."
Rogers mentioned the speed of receiver Shabreia Brannon and rusher Sevyn Woods when asked about players who could make a big impact on Sunday.
He also talked about the experience of Merritt Kelley. Kelley played for Rogers at Vestavia High School.
Quarterback Jayci Sullivan, who is the first signee in program history, echoed coach Rogers when asked about the team.
"The transition to a new system with new teammates has not been easy, but we have continued to move in the right direction," Sullivan said.
Both Sullivan and wide receiver Karissa Johnson are ready to lay the foundation for the program.
"The energy at practice has been contagious," Johnson said. "Knowing we are the first team (at Shelton State) makes this season even more special.
