Shelton State Wins in Flag Football Debut
MOBILE - Shelton State Community College women's flag football team opened its inaugural season with a pair of come-from-behind wins over Bishop State and LB Wallace.
Shelton State defeated Bishop State 12-6 in the first game and win in program history. The Lady Bucs capped off the day with a 19-6 victory LB Wallace.
Head coach Doug Rogers lauded the defensive effort of his team on Sunday.
"I was real proud of our defense," Rogers said. "We put them in some bad situations, but overall we played really well."
The Lady Bucs (2-0) trailed 6-0 in both games on Sunday.
Bishop State (1-1) led 6-0 in the first game when Shelton State turned the ball over on downs on its own 15-yard line. The Wildcats quickly scored to take a 6-0 lead.
LB Wallace (0-2) took 6-0 lead after a tipped pass was returned for a touchdown.
"I think we started a little flat today," Rogers said. "In the second half the girls stepped up and kept them out of the end zone."
Freshman Addison Wheaton scored the first touchdown in program history with a "pick 6" in the second half to tie the game at 6-6.
"That gave momentum and was the turning point," Rogers added.
Freshman Kamryn Everroad (Central HS) scored the game-winning touchdown on quarterback draw.
In the comeback win over Bishop State, freshman receiver Shabreia Brannon scored two touchdowns and made one extra point.
"She was instrumental for us in the win," Rogers said. "She ran some good routes and made some impressive catches."
Freshman linebacker Shilah Borden scored a touchdown and added two interceptions.
Shelton State returns to action Sunday, Sept. 21 when they face Wallace State Hanceville and Calhoun CC in Montgomery.
