Lady Bucs Defense Records Two Shutouts
ANDALUSIA - The Shelton Stare Community College women's flag football team turned in a historic performance on Sunday afternoon, with a pair of shutout victories over Lurleen B. Wallace and Bishop State.
The Lady Bucs posted a 6-0 win over the Saints in game one, then added a 15-0 win over the Wildcats in game two.
Obviously, the defense was the story of the day, but two shutouts in one day didn't go unnoticed by Lady Bucs head coach Doug Rogers.
"The offense should have the advantage if they run a system," Rogers said. "To shut out teams with athletes and a good system takes a great defensive effort.
"Shutouts are not given in most cases but earned by a strong effort and desire to stop the other team from scoring. In this league, with the level of talent we have, it isn't easy."
The Lady Bucs defense forced 13 punts, four turnovers, recorded a safety and turned in a goal-line stand on Sunday.
The Wildcats and Saints only had four total possessions in Bucs territory in the two games.
One particular possession came at the Lady Bucs 10-yard line after a long interception return.
The Lady Bucs defense got a much needed stop to keep the game scoreless.
"The girls were determined not to let them score (at the goal line)," Rogers added. "The defense as a whole communicated very well with each other."
Shelton State's defense was anchored by freshman Sevyn Walker (Dothan), who was again a disruptive force rusher. Freshman Ja'Niya Garrett (Phenix City) and freshman linebacker Shilah Borden (Fort Walton Beach, Fla.) turned in numerous plays at linebacker and freshman Lanijia Seay (St. Petersburg, Fla.) was solid at safety.
Shelton State (4-2) scored with 30 seconds left on the clock to defeat LBW 6-0 in the opener.
Freshman receiver Merritt Kelly (Vestavia Hills) caught a fifty-fifty ball on fourth and goal for the game-winning touchdown as the Lady Bucs avoided overtime.
"Merritt was open on third down in the middle and we didn't throw it there," Rogers said. "(Assistant coach) Ella Gallaspy saw it and told me to run the same play again. This time she was covered up but went up against the defender and made the play. "It was obviously a great individual effort with the game on the line."
The Bucs scored two touchdowns in the 15-0 win over Bishop State.
Seay scored the first touchdown and added the extra point to put the Lady Bucs in front 7-0.
Walker, who had numerous sacks, recorded the schools first safety to make it 9-0 at halftime.
In the second half, Shelton State extended the lead to 15-0 when freshman quarterback Jayci Sullivan (Northside High School) hit freshman Shilah Borden (Fort Walton Beach, Fla.) over the middle to cap the scoring.
Shelton State returns to action Sunday, Oct. 5 against Northwest Shoals (1 p.m.) and Snead State (2:30 p.m.) in Montgomery.
