Lady Bucs Finish Runner-up at ACCC Championship
DOTHAN - The Shelton State Community College women's flag football suffered a 27-6 loss to Wallace State Hanceville in the inaugural ACCC Championship game at Rip Hewes Stadium.
Shelton State (11-6) finished second in the ACCC championships after advancing to finals with a pair of wins over Lurleen B. Wallace and Calhoun on Saturday.
"We performed at the highest level this weekend as we learned and progressed through the season," head coach Doug Rogers said. "We placed more emphasis on growing through the year rather than worrying about wins and losses."
Wallace State (20-0) capped its perfect season with the win over the Bucs on Sunday.
Shelton State's defense held the high-powered Lions offense to its second-lowest point total of the season.
The Bucs had 11 pass breakups, one interception, two tackles for loss and one sack.
Freshman Bree Brannon had five pulls, four pass breakups and a 28-yard interception return.
She also led the offense with four catches for 32 yards the Lady Bucs lone touchdown.
"Shabreia has been a leader on offense and defense as well as a team leader all year," Rogers said. "It isn't surprising to me that she played so good in the championship game."
Freshman Karissa Johnson (Northport) led the way with eight pulls and two breakups.
Freshman Ronnie King added six pulls and one pass breakup.
Freshman Jaidyn Paramore (Tuscaloosa) added five pulls, two pass breakups and one tackle for loss. She also averaged 30 yards on five punts.
Hanceville scored first when ACCC Player of the Year Emma Kile threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Julia Rudolph to put the Lions up 7-0.
Kile found Ma'Kyla Williams for a 13-yard touchdown on the next possession to make it 14-0.
The Lady Bucs found the end zone on the ensuing possession as freshman quarterback Jayci Sullivan (Northside) completed passes to four different receivers. Sullivan's 15-yard pass to Brannon cut the deficit to 14-6.
A penalty-laden drive by the Lady Bucs allowed the Lions to take a 20-6 lead. The Lady Bucs were flagged three times for 23 yards, including a pass interference call on a fourth down stop.
Kile took advantage and hit Taylor Kindred with the 4-yard touchdown pass to make it 20-6 at halftime.
Shelton State was poised to make it a one score game in the third quarter after Brannon intercepted a pass in the end zone and returned it 28 yards.
The Bucs couldn't capitalize and wound up punting.
Hanceville answered with another touchdown to take a 27-6 lead. Kile capped the drive with 19-yard touchdown pass to Telecia Ransom.
Freshman Shilah Borden caught two passes for 33 yards.
Sullivan was 11–for-24 for 108 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
The ACCC announced on Sunday that five schools will add flag football, giving the league 12 teams for the 2026 season.
