Shelton State Men's Golf Set to Kick Off Spring Season
The Shelton State men's golf team had a solid fall season as they showed great progress through five tournaments. After a twelfth and thirteenth finish in the first tournaments of the season, the Buccaneers placed sixth in the next two outings. They ended the fall by coming in fifth out of sixteen teams at the Jefferson State Invitational at Musgrove Country Club in Jasper, AL. Freshman Wyatt McDonald finished tied for fifth in the event. The team was led by sophomore Jackson Hill with a 76.1 scoring average, while several others were just behind with a 77-79 average. The team climbed from 28th to number 25 in the Division I rankings.
This spring, the Buccaneers will have six tournaments, including hosting the Southeast District Championship at Ol' Colony Golf Complex, to improve on their game, their ranking, and their chance for qualifying for the national tournament in Newton, KS. With a top four finish at the district tournament, the team would receive an automatic bid to Kansas.
"This team has worked hard up to this point, steadily improving across the five tournaments of the fall. They have improved their ranking and their chances at making the national tournament, whether by finishing in the top four at the district tournament on our home course or by automatic bid. Hopefully some warm weather will let us get back out on the course, and we can have a good start down in Melbourne, FL. I'm excited to see what these guys can do!" said head coach Chris Sanford
