Layton, Brewer Pace Men’s Golf at National Tournament

PLYMOUTH, Ind. - Freshman Cooper Layton shot an even par 72 to pace the No. 7 ranked Shelton State Community College men's golf team at shot of the 2026 NJCAA Men's Division II National Golf Championship on Wednesday at Swan Lake Golf Resort.
Layton shot an even par 36 on the front nine, which included an eagle on the par five 5th hole and birdie in the par four 6th hole.
He followed with an even par 36 on the back nine. After a bogey on the 14th hole, he made birdie on the 15th hole.
Layton is +3 after two rounds and sits inside the Top 20 heading into round three. He made up 22 spots in the individual standings from day one.
Sophomore Michael Brewer had another solid day with a 74 on Wednesday.
He had an even par 36 on the front nine, with a birdie on No. 4 and bogey on No. 8.
He had two bogeys on the back nine to finish with a 38.
Brewer is +5 after two rounds and is in 35th place.
"Cooper and Michael have both had a good tournament so far," head coach Chris Sanford said. "Cooper had an even par round today, and Mike shot 74. They both look comfortable out there."
As a team, Shelton State moved into 16th place with a +15 (303) on Wednesday.
"We were a little better today, but not as good as we wanted or hoped, Sanford said. "The team is still missing too many fairways, greens, and putts. It just adds stress to the next shot or hole. They are still battling, and hopefully, we can keep dropping our scores and climbing the leaderboard."
Freshman Reid Larson shot 77 (+5) in the second round. He is +13 heading into the final 36 holes.
Sophomore Will Norton shot 80 (+8) on Wednesday and is +13 after two rounds. He made two birdies on Wednesday.
Freshman Dane Galiano shot an 81 (+9) and made an eagle on the par 5 No. 15 hole.
Murray Stare continues to lead the field with a +3 total after 36 holes. Meridian Community College (+7), Southeast Community College (+7), Heartland Community College (+11) and Kirkwood Community College (+12) round out the Top 5.
Murray State's Connor Tallentire (-7) holds a one-shot lead over Meridian's Jace Duckworth (-6) after 36 holes.
The Bucs will tee off at 7:39 a.m. (CT) on Thursday.
