Panama City Beach, FL- The Shelton State softball team dropped a pair of games to kick off their season in Visit Panama City Bech Juco Showdown. The Lady Bucs opened the season against Daytona State, falling 8-1, before facing a 7-5 defeat at the hands of Chattanooga State.
The story of the season opener was errors as the Lady Bucs committed 6 errors leading to 4 unearned runs for the Lady Falcons.
Karlie Beth Beasley recorded the first hit of the season for the Lady Bucs in the 2nd before Jamie Hocutt gave the Lady Bucs the lead in the 3rd after leading inning off with a base hit.
Two errors combined with two hit by pitches allowed the Lady Falcons to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the 3rd, one they would never give up.
The bottom of the 4th inning would be the difference as a lead off error followed by back-to-back base hits and a walk would set the stage for a Daytona State grand slam to stretch the lead to 8-1.
Mackenzie Harper and Marleigh McWilliams both saw time in the circle with Harper picking up the loss after giving up 8 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits, while McWilliams threw 3 scoreless innings allowing just 1 hit.
In game 2, the Lady Bucs were unable to find timely hitting despite launching 3 home runs in the game.
Chattanooga State struck first after a lead-off double and a two-out base hit pushed a run across. The Lady Tigers added a run on a leadoff home-run in the second inning before the Lady Bucs would strike in the bottom half of the inning.
Freshman Lily Vold led the inning off with her first collegiate home-run before Jamie Hocutt launched her first career home-run scoring Gradin Haas as well to give the Lady Bucs a 3-2 lead.
The Lady Tigers would strike back on the first pitch of the 3rd inning tying the game with solo shot to right field.
Tyeshia Willams would notch a lead-off single in the 3rd before being thrown out on a fielder's choice. Lily Vold reached on the play and would come around to score on a Layla Bradshaw bases loaded walk to give the Lady Bucs a 4-3 lead.
The lead would hold until the top of the 5th when Chattanooga State would tie the game on a solo home-run before taking the lead on 2-run shot.
Marleigh McWilliams would cut into the lead in the 5th as she recorded her first career home-run making it just a one run game at 6-5.
A pair of doubles in the 7th would give the Lady Tigers an insurance run before a double play ended the Lady Bucs rally.
Freshman Karlie Beth Beasley went the distance in the circle for the Lady Bucs, giving up 7 runs on 9 hits while striking out 12.
Shelton State will wrap up play in Panama City on Saturday against Patrick and Henry CC at 9:30 AM (CT) and Jones College at 2:30 PM (CT).
