Softball Splits with EMCC
TUSCALOOSA – The Shelton State Community College softball team splits its double header with East Mississippi Community College on Monday afternoon. The Lady Bucs posted a 9-1 run-rule win in the opener, before dropping the second game 4-0.
Freshman Marleigh McWilliams drove in four runs and pitched four innings for the win for the Lady Bucs. She had a three-run double in a four-run first inning giving the Lady Bucs a lead they would never relinquish.
Shelton State added five runs in the third inning to take a 9-1 lead. The Lady Bucs took advantage of two errors and a pair of walks in the big inning. McWilliams plated one run with a bases-loaded walk and sophomore Jamie Hocutt delivered an RBI single. Sophomore Layla Bradshaw added an RBI single and freshman Anna Valentine stroked a two-run double.
McWillams (5-0) pitched four innings for the win. She allowed one run and four hits, with one walk and two strikeouts.
Sophomore Mackenzie Harper pitched a scoreless fifth inning.
East Mississippi (8-8) scored three runs in the first inning of the second game, highlighted by a two-run home run from Savannah Boulware. The Lady Lions added another run in the third inning on a RBI single by Chaley Peterson. All four runs were scored with two outs.
Shelton State (10-6) had its five-game winning streak snapped with the loss in game two.
Savannah Mitchell (4-1), who pitched in both games, went the distance for the win. She limited the Lady Bucs to five hits.
Sophomore Chloe Mitchell (0-1) made her first start of the season and was charged with the loss.
Shelton State is back in action on Tuesday, March 17 with a double header against Parkland College at 1 p.m.
