HANCEVILLE - Shelton State Community College softball team opened ACCC play with a pair of close losses to No. 12 Wallace State Hanceville on Thursday.
The Lady Lions won the opener 3-0 and took the second game 1-0 on a walk-off home run.
Madeline Howard (7-2) tossed a complete-game shutout in game one. She scattered six hits and struck out six.
The Lady Lions (23-4, 6-0 ACCC) gave her just enough offensive support, scoring single runs in the first, fifth, and sixth innings.
Brooklynn Sertell drove in the first two runs for the Lady Lions. She had an RBI groundout in the first inning. She hit solo home run in the fifth.
A. Hunt added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Freshman Karlie Beth Beasley (0-0) also tossed a complete-game for Shelton State. She allowed three runs (1 earned) and five hits. She struck out five.
Shelton State (12-8, 0-2 ACCC) out-hit Hanceville 6-5. Second baseman Megan Wilbanksled the way with two hits.
The second game was also a pitcher's duel between sophomore Mackenzie Harper and Taylor Stalling.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the seventh when Sertell hit a walk off home run to give the Lady Lions a 1-0 win.
Sertell had two home runs in the doubleheader and drove in three of the four runs.
Stalling (7-0) held the Lady Bucs to three hits in the complete game shutout.
Harper (2-4) also went the distance in the circle. She allowed one run and three hits.
The series continues Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader in Tuscaloosa.
