Beasley Tosses No-Hitter as Bucs Sweep Bison
TUSCALOOSA - Shelton State Community College freshman right-hander Karlie Beth Beasley tossed a 7-inning no-hitter in a 5-0 win over Southern Union on Thursday afternoon.
Beasley struck out the first eight batters she faced and finished with a season-high 15 strikeouts in the gem.
"I've been working on my curveball," Beasley said. "We've spent a lot time working on it and my change up was really good today."
She struck out the side in the first, second, fifth, and sixth innings. She struck out every starter at least once.
"I didn't really notice until the middle of the game," Beasley added. "I was focused on trying to get our first conference win."
Southern Union only had two bases runners, reaching on an error in third and sixth inning.
Beasley fittingly ended the game with a strikeout of Annie Gregory.
"I thought KB threw really well today," Shelton State head coach Kaitlin Griffin said. "She attacked the zone consistently and her spin was on another level."
Layla Bradshaw had a good view of the no-hitter from her centerfield.
"I felt it in the first inning. She was locked in and focused," Bradshaw said. "The curve ball and change up were nasty today."
Shelton State (14-10, 2-4 ACCC) provided enough offense with two runs in each of the first two innings.
Sophomore first baseman Chloe Mitchell gave the Lady Bucs a 2-0 lead with an inside-the-park home run in the first inning.
Shelton State doubled its lead with two more runs in the second inning. Sophomore catcher Ragan Landrum had a sac fly and Bradshaw had an RBI double.
Freshman second baseman Megan Overton hit her first home run in the sixth inning to stretch the lead to 5-0.
"Offensively, we finally broke through," Griffin said. "I really challenged them to score first and that's what they did in our first game. Chloe Mitchell coming up early with the inside-the-park home run really set the tone for the day."
Shelton State had 10 hits in game one and that momentum carried over in game two.
The Lady Bucs had 15 hits to rally for a 8-4 win in game two.
Southern Union scored two runs in the top of the first inning on three hits.
Shelton State got one run back in the bottom of the inning when Bradshaw delivered a leadoff triple and scored on a ground out by freshman right fielder Ari Shorter.
The Bison (8-16, 0-6 ACCC) put two more runs the board in the third to make it 4-1.
The Lady Bucs answered again, scoring four runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-4 lead.
Overton drew a bases-loaded walk and pitched Marleigh McWilliams helped her cause with a game-tying two-run single.
Freshman third baseman Kylie Grace Roy singled up the middle to give the Lady Bucs the 5-4 lead.
Sophomore right hander Mackenzie Harper took over in the circle and fired four scoreless innings.
Shelton State scored single runs in the next three innings to stretch the lead to 8-4.
Mitchell delivered an RBI single in the fourth to push the lead to 6-4.
Pinch-hitter Lily Vold had a sac fly in the fifth to make it 7-4.
Roy, who had three hits and two RBIs in the game, adds an RBI single in the sixth to push the lead to 8-4.
Bradshaw and Mitchell combined for 10 hits in the double header. Bradshaw was 5-for-8 with two runs and one RBI. Mitchell went 5-for-6 with three runs, one home run and three RBIs.
The two teams will play again on Saturday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader in Wadley.
