TUSCALOOSA - The Shelton State Community College softball team a double header with Snead State on Thursday afternoon.
Shelton State (21-11, 9-5 ACCC) won the first game 1-0 as sophomore right-hander Mackenzie Harper tossed a one-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts.
The Bucs were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position in the 3-1 loss to the Parsons in game two.
Harper (5-5) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning in the win. She allowed one hit and walked two in seven scoreless innings.
She finished with 10 strikeouts, her third double figure strikeout game of the season.
Harper is 4-0 with one save in last five appearances. She has allowed one earned run in 29 innings with 32 strikeouts.
Brinlee Miller broke up the no-hitter with and one out single in the sixth.
Shelton State scored the lone run in the second inning. Sophomore third baseman Ty Williams stroked a one-out double and scored on sophomore second baseman Jamie Hocutt's RBI single.
Hocutt finished the game with two hits.
Kinley Hyatt (3-14) took the loss despite the complete game effort.
Snead State (11-31, 3-15 ACCC) scored in three of the four innings to take a 1-0 lead.
Makayla Wilkins lead off the game with the single and later scored on an error to give the Parsons a 1-0 lead.
Jalyn Hannah and Brinlee Phillips had back-to-back doubles in the second inning to make 2-0.
Phillips hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to push the lead to 3-0.
The Bucs were held hitless into the sixth as they could not take advantage of six walks and one hit batter from Snead State starter Brooke Mathewson.
She walked the first two batters in the second inning, but retired the next three hitters with two strikeouts.
Mathewson walked the first four batters in the fourth inning, including a bases loaded walk to Hocutt to put the Bucs on the board.
Josie Bunch moved from first base to the circle and retired the three batters to keep the Parsons in front 3-1.
Shelton State left two more runners in the sixth against Bunch.
The Bucs were hitless in eight at-bats in the second game, and 0–for-3 with the bases loaded.
Bunch (2-6) tossed four scoreless innings for the win. She added four strikeouts.
Freshman Karlie Beth Beasley (6-5) suffered the loss, despite complete-game effort. She allowed three runs on six hits with eight strikeouts.
The series concludes with a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m. in Boaz.
