TUSCALOOSA - The Shelton State Community College softball scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to knock off No. 3 ranked Northeast Alabama 3-2 in the regular season finale on Saturday.
The Bucs loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning to set up the winning run.
Sophomore Ragan Landrum opened the frame with a single. Freshman Ari Shorter pinch ran for Landrum at first base.
Freshman Anna Valentine bunted Shorter into scoring position.
Mustangs pitcher Kayleigh Warnock hit three consecutive batters - freshmen Karlie Beth Beasley, Lilly Vold, and Kylie Grace Roy to force home the go-ahead run.
Warnock (7-2) retired the next two hitters without any further damage.
Beasley (11-8) sat down the Mustangs in order in the seventh for her 18th complete game.
Beasley allowed two runs on seven hits, with two strikeouts and two walks.
The two runs and seven hits equaled the second-lowest offensive output by the Mustangs in ACCC play.
Northeast Alabama (48-4, 39-3) suffered just its fourth loss of the season and third in conference play. The Mustangs had their 7-game winning streak snapped.
The Mustangs won the first three games of the series against the Bucs, winning 9-1, 6-2 and 8-0.
Shelton State (30-20, 18-14 ACCC) finishes in third place in the conference standings.
The Bucs have the best record and conference finish in the four seasons under head coach Kaitlin Griffin.
The Bucs took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when sophomore Layla Bradshaw singled and later scored on an error to make it 1-0. Sophomore Chloe Mitchell made it 2-0 with an RBI.
Northeast Alabama scored single runs in the third and sixth innings to tie the game at 2-2.
Marti McCluskey had a sacrifice fly in the third inning and Francesca Lumpp hit a solo home run in the sixth.
Shelton State will open ACCC Tournament play against No. 6 Coastal Alabama South on Thursday, May 14 at Noon at Veterans Park in Alabaster. The tournament runs through Sunday, May 17.
