Softball Splits Two Games at ACCC Tournament

ALABASTER – The Shelton State Community College softball team opened the 2026 ACCC Softball Tournament with a 7-0 win over Coastal Alabama South and then suffered a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to No. 2 seed Wallace State Hanceville in the second game of the day on Thursday at Veterans Park.
Sophomore Mackenzie Harper tossed a complete-game shutout with 11 strikeouts in the opener against the Coyotes. Harper (10-10) was dominant in the circle as she scattered four hits and recorded her fifth double digit strikeout game of the season.
Harper gives the Lady Bucs a pair of 10-game winners this season. Freshman Karlie Beth Beasley (11-8) has won 11 games in the circle. The duo has a combined 21 wins, 33 complete games and 272 strikeouts.
Freshman right fielder Anna Valentine was the offensive catalyst, going 3-for-4 with one run scored and three RBIs. The three hits and three RBIs were both season highs.
Valentine put the Lady Bucs in front 2-0 with a two-run single in the third inning.
Sophomore third baseman Ty Williams hit a solo home run the fourth inning to push the lead to 3-0.
The Lady Bucs scored three runs in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 6-0. Valentine drove in the first run with an RBI single and freshman Lilly Vold delivered a two-run, pinch-hit single to add to the lead.
Sophomore Ragan Landrum capped the scoring with an RBI double in the sixth to make it 7-0. She finished 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI.
Sophomore Chloe Mitchell reached base three times and scored two runs for the Lady Bucs.
Madison Griffith (0-1) went the distance for the Coyotes. She allowed seven runs and 10 hits in six innings. She walked four and did not record a strikeout.
Shelton State (31-21) was looking for its second win of the day against the Lady Lions.
The Lady Bucs led 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning before Hanceville's Charli Kyser hit a three-run home run to put the Lady Lions in front 4-3.
Hanceville (45-10) tacked on another run in the sixth inning on Reese Decker's RBI double.
Shelton State sophomore Jamie Hcoutt delivered a pinch-hit single in the seventh inning to cut the deficit to 5-4. The Lady Bucs stranded the tying run on base when a strikeout ended the game.
Wiliams put the Lady Bucs up 2-0 with a two-run single in the fourth inning.
Hanceville got a run back in the bottom of the inning on a Shelton State error.
Mitchell's RBI single in the fifth stretched the lead to 3-1.
Ava Smith (10-4) picked up the win in relief for the Hanceville.
Beasley (11-9) worked into the sixth inning and was charged with the loss. She allowed five runs and nine hits.
Shelton State continues the double-elimination tournament on Friday, May 15 against Calhoun at Noon.
