Lady Bucs Take Down Wabash Valley in Top 10 Matchup
Poplar Bluff, MO- The Shelton State women's basketball team bounced back after their first loss to defeat the 4th ranked Wabash Valley Lady Warriors, 91-83.
The Lady Bucs (7-1) were led once again by Julie Nekolna who earned her second consecutive double-double finishing with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Alana Obianozie posted a career-high of 17 points, going a perfect 6-6 from the field and 3-3 from the free throw line. Sophomores Makala Hobdy and Lameria Thomas both finished with double-doubles, Hobdy scoring 16 and grabbing 11 rebounds, while Thomas pulled down a team high 14 rebounds to go along with 12 points. Freshman Janiyah Bone chipped in 15 points as every member of the Lady Bucs starting 5 reached double figures.
The Lady Bucs jumped out to an early lead that eventually gave way as Lady Warrior point guard Shamya Reid poured in 14 points in the first quarter to lead Wabash (7-1) to a 29-22 advantage after the 1st quarter. The second quarter saw the Lady Bucs claw their way back into the game as Julie Nekolna scored 9 in the quarter and sophomore Jaylen Pleasant nailed two big 3's, including one at the buzzer, to give the Lady Bucs a 51-44 advantage heading into halftime. "Free throws win big games," said head coach Madonna Thompson. The Lady Bucs went 14-15 from the stripe in the first half and 31-36 for the game.
The 3rd quarter saw the Lady Raiders cut into the lead behind sophomore St. John's University commit Beautiful Waheed, who scored 6 of her game high 29 points in the quarter. The Lady Bucs held strong over the final period, going 6-8 from the free throw line in the 4th quarter to ice the game.
"I am so proud of this group for their response today," said head coach Madonna Thompson. "To be able to come off a loss, where we couldn't finish the game, and take down such a well-coached, talented team is a huge step in the right direction."
The Lady Bucs return to action on Thursday, December 5th, as they host East Mississippi at 5:30 PM.
