Shelton State Uses 3-Point Barrage to Rout Coastal Alabama South
TUSCALOOSA – The No. 9 ranked Shelton State women's basketball team made 12 3-pointers in its 96-57 blowout win over Coastal Alabama South on Thursday night at the Umphrey Center.
The Bucs had five different players with at least one three pointer against the Coyotes. Janiyah Bone led the way with five 3-pointers, tying her season high. She also made five 3-pointers against Meridian on Nov. 18. Jaylen Pleasant, Alana Obianozie and Layla Davis made two 3-pointers and Arissa Jenkins hit one 3-pointer.
The 12 3-pointers are the second most in a game this season by the Bucs. Shelton State made a season-high 13 3-pointers in a 97-36 win at Southern Union on Jan. 27. The Bucs have made 47 three-pointers in the last five games, an average of 9.4 per game.
Shelton State (21-3, 8-0 ACCC) extended its winning streak to 11 games. The Bucs have won 14 games this season by 30 or more points, including the last five straight.
Shelton State led 43-36 at halftime, but the second half 3-point barrage was too much for the Coyotes. The Bucs made 9-of-14 three-point attempts in the second half, including 6-of-7 in the fourth quarter. The Bucs outscored the Coyotes 53-21 in second half.
Julie Nekolna, Obianozie and Bone accounted for 64 of the Bucs 96 points in the win. Nekolna scored a game-high 27 points on 12-of-17 shooting from the floor. Obianozie added 20 points, 15 rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocked shots. Bone added 17 points, including her five 3-pointers.
Denver Arnold led the Coyotes with 25 points.
Shelton State is back in action on Monday, Feb. 10 at Lawson State. The next home game is Thursday, Feb. 13 against Wallace State-Hanceville.
