Lady Bucs Defense Stymies Cougars
BIRMINGHAM - The Shelton State Community College women's basketball team turned in their best defensive performance of the season in a 61-32 win over Lawson State in the ACCC opener for both teams.
The 32 points are the fewest allowed by the Lady Bucs since a 90-26 win at Coastal South on Feb. 12, 2024.
The Lady Bucs have held 11 opponents to 51 points or less this season.
Lawson State (7-10, 0-1 ACCC) shot 29 percent (10-for-45) from the floor in the loss.
The Cougars scored only five total points in the second quarter, missing 12 of their 13 shots. The lone field goal came with 2:52 left in the half.
Shelton State forced 17 turnovers in the win. The Lady Bucs recorded 16 steals.
Shelton State (15-2, 1-0 ACCC) extended its winning streak to 10 straight games.
Sophomore Alana Obianozie (Madison) and freshman Aryah Grace (Meridian, Miss.) both scored 15 points to lead the Lady Bucs.
Obianozie added 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.
In her last six games, she is averaging 14.5 points per game on 37-for-56 (.661) percent shooting.
Freshman Haley Trotter (Chelsea) added eight points and 13 rebounds. It was her fifth double figure rebound game of the season.
Shelton State returns to action on Monday, Jan. 19 against Calhoun Community College in the ACCC home opener at 5:30 p.m.
