Bucs Trio Too Much for Southern Union
TUSCALOOSA - Aryah Grace got off to a fast start Thursday night and never slowed down.
The freshman led the No. 7 Shelton State Community College women's basketball team to a 92-53 win over Southern Union Community College.
Grace scored the Lady Bucs first eight points and finished with a career-high 25 points. It was her third 20-point game of the season and the most points scored by a Lady Bucs player this year.
Sophomore Bri Adams (Adamsvile) and redshirt freshman Abethany James (Huntsville) combined for 28 points off the bench to help the Lady Bucs to their 13th straight.
Adams made all nine shots in the game and finished with 15 points. She was 6-for-6 from floor and 3-for-3 from the foul line.
James had 13 points and four rebounds. She made 4-of-7 field goals, including three 3-pointers.
The Bucs trailed 2-0 and 3-2 before Grace took over the game.
Shelton State (18-2, 4-0 ACCC) made seven of its last 11 shots to take a 29-11 lead after the first quarter.
After a low-scoring second quarter, the Lady Bucs led 43-23 at halftime.
Shelton State outscored Southern Union 26-22 in the third and led 69-45 after three quarters. The 22 points were the most allowed by the Lady Bucs in the third quarter this year.
The Lady Bucs opened the fourth quarter with a 19-0 run to lead 88-45.
The Bison only scored eight points in the fourth quarter.
Grace, Adams and James combined for 41 points in the second half.
Freshman Haley Trotter (Chelsea) finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Southern Union (7-8, 0-4 ACCC) has lost eight straight ACCC games dating back to last season.
Takeriauna Mosley (15) and A'Kayla (13) combined for 28 points.
Shelton State is back in action on Saturday at undefeated Wallace Hanceville (19-0, 4-0 ACCC). The tipoff is 2 p.m.
