#4 Lady Bucs Roll Past Bishop State
TUSCALOOSA – The No. 4 ranked Shelton State Community College women's basketball team played one of its most complete games of the season in a 89-62 blowout win over Bishop State at the Umphrey Center on Thursday night.
Shelton State (24-2, 10-0 ACCC) spotted Bishop State 5-0 lead less than one minute into the game then turned up the offensive and defensive pressure to record in its 19th consecutive win. The Lady Bucs have the fourth longest active winning streak among NJCAA Division I teams.
The Lady Bucs dished out 23 assists in the win over the Lady Wildcats, resulting in easy lay-ups throughout the game. The 23 assists are the most in an ACCC game and second most overall this season for the Lady Bucs. Shelton State also forced 20 turnovers, resulting 21 points.
Shelton State shot better than 50 percent from the floor in the first (.500) and fourth quarters (.571). For the game, the Lady Bucs shot 44.2 percent (34-for-77) from the field and out-rebounded the Lady Wildcats, 53-41.
Freshman Aryah Grace (Meridian, Miss.) led all scorers with 25 points (10-for-20 FG), including 10 points in the first quarter and 18 total points the first half. She has scored double figures in 11 straight games, the longest streak by a Lady Bucs player this season. She also leads the team with five, 20-point games. Grace also added seven rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Sophomore Alana Obianozie (Madison) added 10 points (5-for-7 FG) and seven rebounds.
Freshman Haley Trotter (Chelsae) pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. It was her seventh double-figure rebound game of the season. She also scored eight points and added three assists.
Shelton State got 38 points off the bench, with sophomore Abethany James (Huntsville) and Bri Adams (Adamsville) both scoring 10 points. James (4-for-4 FG) added four assists and three rebounds. Adams had three rebounds, one assist and one steal.
Bishop State (12-14, 4-6 ACCC) was held to 36.4 percent (24-for-66) shooting. Cristyle Mauldin led the way with 17 points, all coming in the second half. LaMerrica Johnson added 16 points. The duo combined to go 13-for-32 from the floor.
Shelton State will host long-time rival Wallace State Hanceville on Monday, Jan. 23 at 5:30 p.m.
