Lady Buccaneer Golf Team Wins in Mobile
The Shelton State Women's Golf Team kicked off the spring season with a tournament win in the Snead State Spring Invitational held at Azalea City Golf Course in Mobile, AL.
After shooting 332 in Monday's first round, the Lady Buccaneers came back strong with a 309 on Tuesday to capture first place in the team standings. Florida Gateway of Lake City, FL finished second. Shelton State, ranked #2 in Division II, also took home individual honors with all six girls placing in the top twelve out of 56 golfers. Peyton Maraman won the event at 151 (78-73), with Jordan Ransdell (161, 81-80), Katie Hallmark (163, 83-80), and Sawyer Hobbs (166, 88-78) making it four out of five for the All-Tournament Team. Mia Hobbs shot a personal best in round 2 (172, 94-78) to finish eleventh, and Aubrie Medford right behind at twelfth (173, 88-85).
"We didn't play that well in the first round at all. Probably a little rust, not as much practice due to weather, and it was cool and quite windy. The team really came out Tuesday and looked like the team from the fall. Peyton didn't feel well, was very consistent, and won the tournament. Jordan and Katie were solid and probably played better than their score. Sawyer had a very nice rebound from round 1, and other than one hole, really had a great round. Mia also came back on Tuesday with her personal best score, and Aubrie, other than a few holes, was hitting it well. Overall, I was very pleased with how the team came back on Tuesday and did such a good job. If putting had been a little better, the score in round two really could have been low. It was good start to the spring, but we must keep working on being consistent, especially with our putters. I was happy with the win, but I was proud of how all six players improved their score from round one." Coach Chris Sanford
The team's next tournament is March 3-4 in Gulf Shores, AL at Gulf Shores Golf Club.
