Women’s Golf Captures Second Tournament Title; Three Golfers Finish in Top 5
MOBILE – The No. 1 ranked Shelton State Community College women's golf team captured its second tournament of the spring on Tuesday, winning the Snead State Women's Spring Invitational Championship at Azalea City GCS in Mobile.
Shelton State carded a two-day total of 834 (+74) for the tournament championship. The Lady Bucs shot 373 (+43) on Monday and closed out the event with a 391 (+31) on Tuesday.
"We didn't score very well the first day with cool temperatures and very windy conditions," Shelton State head coach Chris Sanford said. "However, honestly it was because we struggled putting, not the wind. We gave away too many shots with three=putting. Today was better in that aspect, and with less wind, the scoring went down. I am happy with team for improving and getting the tournament win, but we have some work to do on the greens."
The Lady Bucs finished 33 shots ahead of No. 3 Florida Gateway (+107). No. 4 Wallace State Hanceville (+118), No. 5 Jefferson State (+123) and No. 10 Northwest Mississippi (+142) rounded out the Top 5.
Freshman Riley Fritz, sophomore Katie Hallmark and freshman Katie Brannon all finished in the Top 5, while freshman Emma Bark finished seventh to give the Lady Bucs four Top 10 finishes.
Fritz shot a two-day total 158 (+14) to finish in third place for the Lady Bucs. She finished with a 78 on Tuesday, collecting four birdies along the way. On Monday, she fired an 80, which included an eagle on the par-4 No. 16 hole.
Hallmark finished fourth with a two-day score of 159 (+15). She shot a 4-over 76 on Tuesday with a pair of birdies. On Monday, she carded an 83 with nine pars.
Brannon shot a 160 (+16) to give the Lady Bucs a third Top 5 finisher. Brannon shot 83 on Monday and 77 on Tuesday, Her final round score included two birdies.
Sophomore Sawyer Hobbs, and freshmen Addison Davis and Kelsey Mason gave the Lady Bucs seven Top 21 finishers in Mobile.
Hobbs shot +27 to finish in the 13th place. She had two birdies on Monday and shot 83. She carded an 88 on Tuesday.
Davis also finished in the Top 20 with a +31 score (19th place) for the Lady Bucs. After shooting a 91 on Monday, she improved her score on Tuesday by seven strokes (84).
Kelsey Mason was 32-over par to finish in 21st place. She posted an 88 on both days and finished with 12 pars.
