Baseball Sets Program Record for ACCC Wins

TUSCALOOSA - The No. 16 ranked Shelton State Community College baseball team swept a doubleheader with Calhoun on Thursday afternoon winning 5-0 and 9-7, and in the process set the program record for conference wins.
Shelton State set the program record with its 29th ACCC win. The previous record was 28 wins set in 2024.
Shelton State (40-16, 29-5 ACCC) is one win from tying the all-time ACCC record with 30 conference wins.
Wallace-Dothan holds the record with 30 wins set in 2024.
Shelton State clinched its 19th regular season ACCC championship with the win in game one.
The Bucs have also won 40 games for the 12th time in school history. The Bucs have reached 40 wins in each of the last three seasons.
Freshman right-hander Tanner Hermesch and sophomore left-hander Jack Sanderson combined on the Bucs 11th shutout of the season in game one.
The 11 shutouts rank second nationally. Arizona Western leads the nation with 12 shutouts.
Hermesch (3-0) allowed one single in 5 2/3 scoreless innings. He walked one and struck out seven. Neither runner advanced to second base.
Sanderson recorded the final four outs. He allowed one hit, one walk and struck out one.
Shelton State broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the fourth inning.
Freshman shortstop Griffin Rardin was hit by a pitch with one out and freshman left fielder Owen Anchors blasted a 2-run home run to put the Bucs up 2-0.
Sophomore right fielder John Robicheaux followed with a double to left-center. Freshman DH Jarret Scott reached on an infield hit and both runners advanced on a throwing error by second baseman Austin Williamson.
Freshman centerfielder Cody Kropp made it 4-0 with a single to left.
Shelton State pushed the lead to 5-0 in the fifth inning. Sophomore right fielder Jackson Henderson led off with a double and scored on an RBI single by Rardin.
Josh Burrell (3-6) went the distance for the Warhawks in the losing effort. He allowed five runs and eight hits.
Shelton State jumped out to a 9-0 leading the nightcap and held on for a 9-7 win.
Sophomore right-hander Eli Driskell (9-2) picked up his league-leading ninth win with five scoreless innings.
Calhoun (14-35, 10-24 ACCC) scored one run in the sixth inning and added two in the seventh. The Warhawks scored four runs in the ninth and brought the go-ahead run to the plate.
Calhoun scored three unearned runs off sophomore right hander Kenneth Diddell before sophomore left hander Corbin Hamric got the final three outs for his league-leading sixth save.
The Bucs scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning to grab an early 6-0 lead. Shelton State took advantage of three hits and four walks.
Rardin drove in the first run with an RBI single. Anchors and freshman first baseman Glavine Lamberth added sacrifice flies to make it 3-0.
Sophomore third baseman Slade Sullivan followed with an RBI single and freshman Drew Ollis ripped a two-run triple to push the lead to 6-0
Sophomore second basemen James Graphos delivered a two-run single in the second inning to make it 8-0.
The lead went to 9-0 in the fourth on sophomore DH Grant Browning's RBI groundout.
Calhoun had 14 hits in game two, lead by Trent Wilson, who had two hits and three RBIs.
The two teams play again on Saturday, May 2 at Noon at Fred Frickie Field in Decatur.
