Wilkin, Defense Lead Bucs to Win
TUSCALOOSA - The Shelton State Community College men's basketball team turned in its best defensive performance of the season en route to a 69-52 winn in over Hinds Community College.
Shelton State (5-1) limited the Bulldogs to 10 points in the final eight-plus minutes of the game.
The Bucs led 47-42 before a 12-1 run lifted the lead to 59-43. The Bucs forced five straight turnovers in that stretch.
Freshman Anderson Wilkin (Tuscaloosa) led the Bucs with 15 points but credited the defensive effort for the win.
"It was really the defensive end that won the game," Wilkin said. "We had to really lock in on defense. We have a goal to hold teams under 60 and we did the first time today."
Hinds (6-2) shot only 30.5 percent from the floor and made only three of 16 three-pointers.
Shelton State led 35-29 at halftime. Both teams started slow, before the Bucs caught fire and scored the first seven points for a 7-0 lead with 16:13 left.
Hinds got back in the game with Daveon Henry and Terrance Clark combining for 17 first half points.
The game was tied at 21-21, 25-25 and 27-27 before the Bucs closed with an 8-2 run, sparked by a 3-pointer from Wilkin, who led the Bucs with nine first half points.
"I got a great pass from Fred (Derrick)
and was open corner with a low shot clock and I made the shot," Wilkin added.
The Bucs shot 38.9 percent from the floor and made one three of 18 three-pointers.
Shelton State was 24-for-41 at the foul line, but did make seven of its last 10 from the line down the stretch.
Wilkin made 6-of-12 shots to lead all scorers. He was joined in double figures by Derrick and Bryant "B-Dot" Aijero.
Derrick had 11 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists off the bench.
Aijero had 10 points and 13 rebounds for his second straight double-double.
Henry (14) and Clark (13) paced the Bulldogs in scoring.
The Bucs return to action Monday, Nov. 17 against East Mississippi Community College. The Lady Bucs play at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30 p.m.
