Bucs Hit 16 3-Pointers for First Road Win
FULTON, Miss. - As a steady rain fell outside the Davis Center, but inside the Shelton State Community College men's basketball team rained three-pointers.
The Bucs (9-2) made a season-high 16 three-pointers en route to an 85-76 win over Itawamba Community College on Thursday.
The 16 three-pointers are the most by the Bucs since also hitting 16 treys against Marion Military Institute on March 2, 2021.
Seven different players made a three-pointer for the Bucs, who made 16-of-30 (.533) shots behind the arc.
The Bucs only made three 3-pointers (20 attempts) in Monday's loss at East Mississippi.
The made 30-of-62 (.484) field goals and 14-of-17 (.824) free throws.
Sophomore DJ Hamlett (Tuscaloosa) buried a go-ahead three-pointer with 5:22 left in the game as the Bucs took a 71-68 lead.
Shelton State closed the game with a 17-8 run for its first road win of the season.
Freshman King Larkin (Tuscaloosa) later buried a three-pointer and freshman Frederick Derrick (Huntsville) hit a jumper in the paint to give the Bucs their biggest lead at 81-71.
Itawamba (6-5) scored the first six points of the second half to take a 45-40 lead. The Indians held the lead until the final seven minutes.
Damarion Winston paced the Indians with 29 points.
The Bucs scored the first eight points of the game in a back-and-forth first half. Larkin and freshman TJ Pruitt (Huntsville) combined for 23 points in the first 20 minutes as the Bucs drained 10 3-pointers.
Larkin filled the stat sheet with 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Hamlett had 12 points and a career-high eight assists. Derrick added 12 points, while Pruitt and Hall had 11 points each. Pruitt also pulled down five rebounds.
