Softball Sweeps Southern Union
WADLEY - The Shelton State Community College softball team completed the series sweep with a pair of wins over Southern Union.
The Lady Bucs posted a 14-1 run-rule win in game one. Then finished off the sweep with an 8-2 win in the series finale.
Shelton State (16-19, 4-4 ACCC) ecorded its first ACCC sweep since April 13-15, 2021 against Bevill State.
Sophomores Chloe Mitchell and Ragan Landrum, and freshman Laila Watkins all homered in game one.
The Bucs scored five runs in the second inning and added three runs in each of the next three innings.
Landrum had a an RBI double and Mitchell added a two-run home run in the five-run second inning. It was Mitchell's eighth home run of the year.
Freshman Kylee Grace Roy delivered an RBI and Mitchell had a two-run single in the second inning.
The Lady Bucs made it 11-0 in the third inning on back-to-back home runs by Landrum and Watkins. Landrum drilled a two-run home run, her first of the season. Watkins followed with her second homer of the season.
Mackenzie Harper took a no-hitter into the fourth inning before allowing a double to Sara Roten, who later scored on a passed ball to cut the deficit to 11-1.
Harper (6-2) allowed one unearned run on two hits with eight strikeouts in the win. It was her second win of the series.
The Lady Bucs added three more runs in the fifth to stretch the lead to 14-1. The first run scored on an error and Landrum drove in two more runs with a single.
Landrum went 3-for-4 with two runs, one double, one home run and five RBIs.
Mitchell went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs.
The Lady Bucs carried that momentum into game two, taking the lead with three runs in the fourth inning.
Sophomore Jamie Hocutt and Watkins had RBI singles and Watkins later scored on an error.
Megan Wilbanks had an RBI triple in the sixth and Ty Williams smacked a two-run homer in the seventh.
Freshman Marleigh McWilliams went the distance in the circle for the win.
Southern Union (8-18, 0-8 ACCC) has lost eight straight games.
Shelton State returns to action on Thursday, April 2, with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Northwest Shoals.
