Softball Splits DH with Gadsden State

TUSCALOOSA - The Shelton State Community College softball team split s doubleheader with Gadsden State at the Bucs Softball Comolex on Thursday.
Shelton State snapped Gadsden State's eight-game winning streak with an 8-3 win in game one.
Freshman left fielder Laila Watkins reached base three times and scored three runs in the opener.
Sophomore Layla Bradshaw had two hits and two RBIs.
Gadsden State (34-13, 12-10 ACCC) rebounded to win game 2-1 as right hander Pressley Slaton (8-0) scattered six hits in the compete game victory.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning in game one.
Molly Weaver and Payton Earp (Tuscaloosa County HS) delivered RBI singles.
The lead was short-lived as the Bucs answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-2 lead.
Watkins began the rally with s double and moved third on a single by sophomore third baseman Ty Williams.
Sophomore catcher Ragan Landrum plated the first run with an RBI single and freshman shortstop Gradin Hass tied the game with an RBI single to left.
Freshman second baseman Megan Wilbanks put the Bucs up 3-2 with a sacrifice fly.
Shelton State (26-14, 13-8 ACCC) stretched the lead to 6-2 with three more runs in the third inning.
Sophomore first baseman Chloe Mitchell snapped an 0-for-10 slump with a leadoff home run. It was her ninth of the season
Bradshaw drove in two runs with a single to left.
The Bucs upped its lead to 8-2 with two runs in the fourth. Watkins scored on an error and Hass contributed her second RBI single of the game.
The Cardinals scored their final run in the fifth on Cayla Brothers RBI single.
Shelton sophomore Mackenzie Harper (7-6) posted her third straight complete-game victory. She allowed three runs and five hits with six strikeouts and a season-high six walks.
Kaitlin Raines (12-2) allowed four runs and seven hits in two-plus innings and took the loss.
The Bucs failed to pick up their final run key hit in a 2-1 loss in game two.
Like game one, Gadsden State took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI ground out by Weaver and a passed ball.
The Bucs immediately answered with a run in the bottom of the frame to make it 2-1.
Watkins and freshman pitcher Karlie Beth Beasley delivered back-to-back one out double to put the Bucs on the board. Beasley, however, was stranded at second.
The Bucs missed out its best opportunity to tie the game in the fifth.
Bradshaw laced a one-out triple to right field with one out. Wilbanks was called to bunt and got the ball on the ground, but Slaton made a diving stop of the ball and threw Bradshaw out at home.
Shelton State stranded seven runners in the loss.
Beasley (8-6) once again was the tough-luck loser in the circle. She allowed two runs (1 earned) and four hits, with two walks and seven strikeouts.
In her 15 starts the year, the Bucs have scored two runs or less eight times.
Watkins and Bradshaw paced the Bucs offense.
Watkins was 3-for-4 with four runs, two doubles, two walks and one sacrifice bunt.
Bradshaw was 4-for-8 with one triple and two RBIs.
The series shifts to Gadsden, where the two teams will play a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, April 24.
