GADSDEN - The Shelton State Community College softball team pounded out 23 hits en route to a double header sweep over Gadsden State at the Gadsden Sports Complex.
Shelton State (28-14, 16-8 ACCC) posted 11 hits en route to a 3-1 win in game one. The Lady Bucs added 12 hits in the 5-2 win in game two.
Freshman second baseman Megan Wilbanks had a career day, going 6-for-8 with one double and two runs scored.
Sophomore first baseman Chloe Mitchell (4-for-8) collected three extra base huts and two RBIs.
Sophomore centerfielder Layla Bradshaw had four hits in the doubleheader, including her first career home run in game one.
Freshman left fielder Laila Watkins went 4-for-8 with one run, one double and one RBI.
The quartet went a combined 18-for-30 (.600) with five extra base hits and five RBIs.
Sophomore Mackenzie Harper and freshman Karlie Beth Beasley were strong in the circle with two complete game victories.
Harper (9-6) held the Cardinals to one unearned run on three hits in the opener.
Beasley (9-7) held the Cardinals to two runs on six hits with four strikeouts.
Shelton State trailed 1-0 in game one before Bradshaw tied the game with an inside the park home run in the third inning.
Following the home run, Wilbanks doubled and Mitchell and Watkins both singled to load the bases.
Wilbanks scored the go ahead run on a wild pitch to make it 2-1.
The Lady Bucs added an insurance run in the fifth when Wilbanks singled and scored on a double by Watkins.
Shelton Stare carried that momentum into game two and scored three runs in the first inning.
Mitchell delivered a two-run triple and scored on a subsequent error to give the Lady Bucs a 3-0 lead.
Shelton Stafe scored single runs in the third and fifth innings to push the lead to 5-0.
Watkins singled and scored on a double by freshman third baseman Ty Williams in the third.
Bradshaw singled and scored on Watkins RBI single in the fifth.
Gadsden State (35-14, 12-14 ACCC) avoided the shutout with two runs in the sixth. Katelyn St. Clair had an RBI triple. and Cacey Brothers added an RBI.
Shelton State will take on Calhoun Community College next week.
