Lady Bucs Tame Lions, 106-42
TUSCALOOSA - The Shelton State Community College women's basketball team placed six players in double figures en route to a 106-42 win over East Mississippi Monday night.
The Lady Bucs fell behind 2-0 in the first 30 seconds of the game then reeled off 17 straight points and never looked back in the 60-plus point win.
Shelton State (3-1) shot almost 50 percent from the field for the game but the defense keyed the victory.
The Lady Bucs forced 33 turnovers and added 23 steals in the game. Shelton State scored 45 points off turnovers.
Shelton State held the Lions to 10 points or less the three of the four quarters.
"We took a more aggressive approach and knew we could get our hands on the ball," freshman Kaitlyn Gipson said. "Our defense then led to offense."
A trio of freshman led the Bucs, including Gipson (Hoover), Aryah Grace (Meridian, Miss.) and Haley Trotter (Chelsea).
Grace led all scorers with 22 points (9-17 FG) in 18 minutes of action.
She tallied 11 points in the first quarter before picking up her second fouls. She single-handedly outscored the Lions (11-7) in the first 10 minutes.
Grace added nine points in the third quarter.
Gipson finished with 18 points (7-11 FG), including eight in the fourth quarter.
"I think we played well," Gipson said. "We shared ball and shot it well. We got into a good rhythm.
"One thing we talked about all week was effort and the effort was definitely there tonight."
Trotter recorded her first double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds in her first start of the season.
Two other players narrowly missed double-doubles for the Lady Bucs. Freshman Nadia Norfleet (Tupelo, Miss.) had 14 points and seven assists. Sophomore Alana Obianozie(Madison) had eight points and eight steals.
Redshirt freshman Abethany James added 10 points off the bench.
The Lady Bucs will travel to Twin Falls, Idaho for a three-game tournament hosted by the College of Southern Idaho this weekend.
