Lady Bucs Stifle Monroe in 71-41 WIn
Twin Falls, Idaho- The Shelton State women's basketball team used stifling defense to take down Monroe University (NY) 71-41.
The Lady Bucs were led by freshman Nadia Norfleet, who exploded for 22 points on 8-12 from the field. Alana Obianozie pitched in 12 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists while Aryah Grace posted a 10-point, 14 rebound double-double.
Monroe University is known for their high-powered run and gun offense, but the Lady Bucs were able to hold them to a season low 41 points on 18.6% (13-70) shooting.
Shelton started the game on a 10-0 run before the Lady Mustangs turned in a 11-2 response to put the game at 12-11 at the first media timeout. Following the media timeout, Monroe would be held scoreless for the rest of the quarter while the Lady Bucs would add 9 more points to make the score 21-11 after 10 minutes of play.
The 2nd quarter saw the Lady Bucs turn up the defense only allowing 3 points in the quarter, a season low for the Mustangs. A 16-point quarter extended the lead to 23, going into halftime.
The scoring struggles continued for both teams in the second half as both teams combined to shoot 14-47 from the field, but Lady Bucs were able to add to their lead in both quarters.
"Our defense was at an elite level today," said head coach Madonna Thompson. "To hold such a prolific offense to a season low is a big step forward for us." "We are moving in the right direction but will have to be even better tomorrow to beat CSI at home."
The Lady Bucs wrap up the Battle for the Boot Classic tomorrow as they play the host team, College of Southern Idaho at 8:00 PM (CT).
