Lady Bucs Defense Keys Road Win
POPLARVILLE, Miss. - The No. 11 Shelton State Community College women's basketball teams used a stingy defense to defeat Pearl River Community College 62-49 on Monday night at the Marvin R. White Coliseum.
Shelton State (14-2) extended its winning streak to nine straight games.
The Lady Bucs held an opponent to less than 50 points for the 11th time this season.
Pearl River (7-4) cut the Shelton State lead to 48-46 with under eight minutes to play before the Lady Bucs closed the game with a 14-3 run to seal the double digit win.
The Wildcats missed 12 of their last 13 did not score a bucket in the final eight minutes.
The Lady Bucs held the Wildcats to 27.7 percent (18-for-65) shooting from the field.
Freshman Haley Trotter (Chelsea) pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds, including 15 defensive rebounds.
The 17 rebounds are the most by a Lady Bucs player since Lameria "CoCo" Thomas pulled down 18 against Wallace State in February of last season. Maya Cunningham also pulled down 17 boards against Georgia Highlands on Nov. 5, 2021.
Sophomore Alana Obianozie (Madison), and freshmen Nadia Norfleet (Tupelo) and Aryah Grace (Meridian) accounted for a majority of the offense.
The trio combined for 46 points (19-for-41 FG) in the win.
Obianozie finished with 18 points (8-for-10 FG) and eight rebounds.
Norfleet added 15 points, five assists and four rebounds.
Grace tallied 13 points and six rebounds.
Shelton State trailed 8-7 early in the game but closed the first quarter with a 15-0 run to take a 22-8 lead.
The two teams traded 10-0 scoring runs in second quarter as the Bucs led 34-24 at halftime.
Wilson hit half court shot to end third quarter as the Wildcats cut lead to 46-43.
The Lady Bucs open ACCC play on January 15 as they travel to Lawson State for a 5:30 P.M. tipoff.
