Lady Bucs Defeat Warhawks; Extend Winning Streak to 11 Games
TUSCALOOSA – The Shelton State Community College women's basketball team extended its winning streak to 11 straight games with a 90-61 win over Calhoun Community College at the Umphrey Center Monday night.
No. 10 Shelton State (16-2, 2-0 ACCC) has the eighth-longest winning streak among NJCAA women's teams in the country. The Lady Bucs have not lost since Nov. 23.
Shelton State used an 18-6 run at the end of the first quarter to take a 24-13 lead. Sophomore Alana Obianozie (Madison) dominated the first quarter for the Lady Bucs, with nine points, five rebounds, four steals and one blocked shot.
The Lady Bucs shot 62.5 percent (10-for-16) from the field in the first quarter.
Shelton State pushed the lead to 48-27 at halftime behind a strong quarter from sophomore Arissa Jenkins (Haines City, Fla.). Jenkins scored nine points off the bench and pulled down five rebounds in the second period.
The Lady Bucs led by as many as 35 points with 3:57 left in the third quarter and took a 70-39 lead in the final period.
Calhoun (10-7, 1-1 ACCC) outscored Shelton State 22-20 in the final 10 minutes.
Shelton State had four players in double figures, including a game-high 16 points from freshman Aryah Grace (Meridian, Miss.). She made 6-of-14 shots, including a pair of three-pointers.
Obianozie finished with 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots. Freshman Nadia Norfleet (Tupelo) added 14 points and six assists. Jenkins finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Victoria Pyles led the Warhawks with 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting, including four three-pointers.
Shelton State travels to Mobile on Thursday, Jan. 22 to face Bishop State at 5:30 p.m.
