Lady Bucs Cruise Past Lady Coyotes
TUSCALOOSA - No. 6 ranked Shelton State Community College women's basketball team cruised to a 101-53 win over Coastal Alabama South on Thursday.
The Lady Coyotes scored the first basket of the game before the Lady Bucs reeled off 22 unanswered points to take a 22-2 lead and control of the game.
The Lady Bucs (21-2, 7-0 ACCC) led 37-11 after the first quarter and 65-15 at halftime thanks to a swarming defense and easy transition.
Coastal South had 17 first half turnovers which led to 28 points for the Lady Bucs.
"Defense leads to offense," freshman Nadia Norfleet said. "We had a lot of intensity on defense and turned that into easy baskets."
Shelton State's 37 first-quarter points were the second most in quarter this year.
The Lady Coyotes managed only four points in the second quarter, the second-fewest allowed by the Lady Bucs this season.
Shelton State shot 50.7 (37-for-73) percent from the floor, marking just the second time this season the Lady Bucs shot 50 percent or better from the field.
The Lady Bucs led by as many as 56 points in the third quarter.
"This was one of our better games," Norfleet added. "We shot the ball really well, one of our better shooting nights. We were focused from the beginning."
The starters combined for 75 points in the win.
Norfleet led the way with 21 points. She made eight baskets, recorded a season-high six steals, and handed out three assists.
Freshman Aryah Grace scored 16 points, her eighth straight double figure game. She also added a carer-high five steals.
Sophomore Alana Obianozie finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. She made 5-of-7 field goal attempts.
Freshman Haley Trotter had 13 points and nine rebounds. Trotter made 5-of-6 shots, including there 3-pointers.
Freshman Ella Wheeler had 11 points and four rebounds.
Freshman Kaitlyn Gipson put the Lady Bucs over the century mark with a layup and free throw with 1:07 left in the game.
Shelton State has scored 100 points three times this season.
Coastal Alabama (14-7, 2-5 ACCC) was led by Trya Caves' 20 points, including a 13-point third quarter.
Shelton State gets some much needed time off before returning to the floor on Thursday, Feb. 12 against Lawson State at 5:30 p.m.
