No. 5 Lady Bucs Pull Away from Lady Warhawks
DECATUR – The No. 5 ranked Shelton State Community College women's basketball team used a strong fourth quarter to pull away from the Calhoun Lady Warhawks 72-52 on Monday night.
Shelton State outscored Calhoun 25-15 in the fourth quarter to defeat the pesky Warhawks. Eight different players scored for the Lady Bucs in the final 10 minutes, with freshmen Aryah Grace and Haley Trotter scoring five points each. Sophomore Arissa Jenkins and freshman Nadia Norfleet both had four points in the fourth quarter.
Shelton State (23-2, 9-0 ACCC) extended its winning streak to 18 straight games, the fourth-longest among NJCAA Division teams in the country.
The Lady Bucs nearly led wire-to-wire on Monday. The game was tied at 2-2 and 4-4 before Shelton State took the lead for good at 6-4 in the first quarter. Shelton State 15-8 after the first quarter and 29-25 at halftime.
Shelton State led the Calhoun 47-38 at the end of three quarters and did not take its first double-digit lead until seven minutes remaining in the game.
The Lady Bucs only shot 32.2 (26-for-62) percent from the field but shot 55 percent (22-for-40) on its two-point field goals.
Norfleet, Grace, Trotter and sophomore Alana Obianozie all scored double figures for the Lady Bucs.
Norfleet led the charge with 18 points (6-for-12 FG; 5-for-7). She added four rebounds, three assists and one steal. Norfleet has 21 double-figures games this season, including five straight.
Grace added 15 points for her 10th straight double-digit game. She has 19 double-figure games this season.
Trotter added 13 points, five rebounds and career-high three blocked shots.
Obianozie collected 11 points, 12 rebounds and three assists in the win. It was her 40th career double-figure game and seventh career double-double.
Calhoun (11-13, 2-7 ACCC) got 35 combined points from Jasmine Ervin (25) and Gabrielle Stigger (10).
The Lady Bucs return to action on Thursday, Feb. 19 when they host Bishiop State at 5:30 p.m. at the Umphrey Center in Tuscaloosa.
