No. 4 Lady Bucs Winning Streak Snapped
TUSCALOOSA – One of the most incredible winning streaks in sports history came to end Monday night.
No. 4 Shelton State Community College women's basketball team had its 178-game regular season ACCC winning streak snapped in a 45-43 loss to long-time rival and No. 15 Wallace State Hanceville 45-43 at the Umphrey Center on the Shelton State campus.
The Lady Bucs last regular season conference loss came in a 72-66 setback at Lawson State on Feb. 26, 2015, a span of 4,025 days. Last year, Wallace State defeated Shelton State 49-46 in the ACCC Championship Game on March 8, 2025 to snap the Lady Bucs 215-game winning streak against all ACCC schools.
It was the Lady Bucs first home conference loss since Feb. 20, 2014 when they dropped a 64-59 decision to the Lady Lions.
Shelton State had its 18-game winning streak and its 36-game winning streak in the month of February snapped.
Shelton State defeated Wallace State Hanceville by the same score 45-43 on Jan, 31 to snap the Lady Lions season-opening 19-game winning streak.
Zamyra Goode sank a pair of free throws to give the Lady Lions a 45-43 lead with 1:01 left in the game. The teams combined for three turnovers on the next three possessions before Sinaya Gibson was fouled with one second left. Gibson missed both foul shots and Shelton State freshman Haley Trotter pulled down her 18th rebound of the game.
After a timeout with 0.5 second left, the Lady Bucs advanced the ball to half court. Freshman Nadia Norfleet took the inbounds pass and dribbled once as time expired. She made the three-point shot but time had already expired.
In a back-and-forth defensive game, Shelton State went 11 minutes in the first half without a basket and had five shot-clock violations,
Wallace State (25-1, 10-1 ACCC) outscored Shelton State 21-3 from the three-point line. The Lady Bucs made only 1-of-19 three-pointers and after missing their first 14 attempts.
Freshman Ayrah Grace led the Lady Bucs with 17 points and eight rebounds. It was her 12th straight double-figure scoring game of the season, and 21st overall. Trotter added 12 points and 18 rebounds, the most by a Lady Bucs player this season and the most since "CoCo" Thomas pulled down 18 rebounds against Wallace State Hanceville last season.
Goode led the Lady Lions with 17 points, including 9-of-11 from the foul line. Leah Childress came off the bench and scored 13 points, including three 3-pointers.
Shelton State returns to action this Thursday, Feb, 26 with a 5:30 p.m. game at Southern Union in Wadley.
