No. 3 Shelton State Cruises Past No. 14 Chipola
LAKE CHARLES, La. – No. 3 Shelton State Community College women's basketball team turned in a dominant performance in its 70-51 win over No. 14 Chipola College in the Sweet 16 round of the 2022 NJCAA Women's Basketball National Tournament on Thursday.
Shelton State (30-3) hit the 30-win mark for the 13th time in program history.
The Lady Bucs starting lineup did all the damage. The starting five scored all 70 points and played all but 11 minutes in the double-digit win.
"We prep all year for March," Shelton State head coach Madonna Thompson said. "We came out tonight and wanted the game. We beat them earlier this year and we beat them in the Elite Eight last year. We had a lot of emotion. It was a knock down drag out tonight."
Freshman Nadia Norflett led the way with a season-high 24 points (10-of-19 FG) and seven assists. It was her sixth 20-point game of the season and third straight.
Freshman Aryah Grace added 17 points (5-of-8 3FG) and three rebounds.
Freshman Haley Trotter posted another double, with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Freshman Ella Wheeler scored 11 points(3-of-9 3FG) and pulled down three rebounds
Sophomore Alana Obianozie had six points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Shelton State made 13-of-29 (.448) three-pointers, the second-most in a game this season. Four different players made at least one three-pointer.
The Lady Bucs played defense, too.
Shelton State has held opponents to less than 60 points in 29 games this season, including the last seven games.
The Lady Bucs scored 28 points off 15 turnovers in the win.
Shelton State will face either Trintiy Valley or Gulf Coast State in the Elite Eight on Saturday, March 28 at 4:45 p.m. (CT).
